BIOSCAN and marine sampling

Cataloguing and monitoring marine biodiversity offers challenges beyond those encountered on land, but much progress has already been made within the iBOL community in developing standards and protocols for barcoding and metabarcoding sessile and planktonic organisms, along with fish and other larger marine fauna.

This topic is to support discussion of the issues and challenges that need to be addressed to enable BIOSCAN to serve as an effective global contribution to marine biomonitoring.

The following paper, published today, provides a review of the challenges and opportunities around marine genetic resources, particularly in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJs). It includes limited references to the development of metabarcoding as a tool for this purpose.
